Effective, August 31, 2013 International House will no longer offer short-term guest accommodations. This change is a result of two important and exciting changes within the University of Chicago and Hyde Park community.
First, in the Autumn of 2013, a new, independently-owned and operated boutique-style hotel – Hyatt Place Chicago South – will be opening at Harper Court. The six-floor, 131-room hotel will be the first new hotel in Hyde Park in almost fifty years, and will fill a pressing need for a quality hotel for business travelers, students, families, and tourists. Complete information about the Hyatt Place Chicago Hotel South is available at http://hydeparkchicagohotel.com/.
Another change impacting the International House community involves the University of Chicago’s plan to build a major new residence hall and dining commons for students in the College, advancing the University’s commitment to an excellent student life experience with a modern facility near the core of the campus. Scheduled to open in 2016, the new project will be located between Greenwood and University avenues along 55th Street, on the site of the current Pierce Tower and Dining Commons and the North Field recreational area. As part of the plan, Pierce Tower and Dining Commons closed at the end of this past academic year. Beginning in the Autumn of 2013, International House is pleased to welcome students from two Pierce houses - Thompson House and Shorey House.
In the Autumn of 2013, International House anticipates filling all 485 residential rooms with permanent residents. Admission to International House at the University of Chicago is a selective process that seeks to bring together individuals from a wide variety of regions, cultures and institutions. Students and scholars who wish to live in International House must complete an Application for Residence, submit an application payment, as well as provide documentation substantiating their classification designation. For complete information on applications for permanent residence at International House for the 2013-2014 academic year, please visit our website at http://ihouse.uchicago.edu.
