OIA Move Information and FAQ

The Office of International Affairs is excited to announce that we will be moving to a new campus location during the week of July 24. We are moving across the Midway to the second floor of the Press Building. While we are looking forward to this exciting change, the move will cause a temporary suspension to some OIA services. See below for details on OIA hours and services during the week of July 24.

The physical OIA office will be closed for the move, but advisers will still be available through email during regular business hours. While the move occurs, only some OIA services will be available. See below for details on OIA hours and services during the week of July 24:
    • Mon, Jul 24: Regular OIA business hours and services

    • Tue, Aug 1: OIA resumes regular business hours.

  • When will the new office be open?
We will re-open in our new space on Mon, Aug 1. We are hoping to offer all regular services starting Aug 1. However, moves can be unpredictable. It is possible that suspension of some services will last longer than expected.  Thank you in advance for your patience and flexibility as we work to move into our new home.

  • Will advisers be available during the move?
Yes. Staff will be working remotely, but will be available by email during regular business hours. However, the office will be closed for all in-person services, appointments, and processing requests. If you need assistance while the office is closed, please email your adviser directly, or write to us at: international-affairs@uchicago.edu

  • Is your phone number going to remain the same?
Yes, all email addresses and phone numbers will remain the same. However, during the move, we will experience phone outages. Please email us if you need to reach an adviser during the dates listed above.

  • I need to submit an application. get a travel signature, pick up a document, or receive a different front desk service from Jul 26 to Jul 28?  What can I do?
You will need to make arrangements to take care of your request either before Jul 25 or after Aug 1.  OIA will be closed to visitors from Jul 26 to Jul 28 and will not be equipped to process requests, issue documents, or provide front desk services, including but not limited to: new student I-20/DS-2019, OPT, CPT, travel signatures, enrollment letters, in-person advising appointments, ITIN appointments, or any pick-up/drop-off.

If you want to pick up your requests before we close, please have them submitted no later than July 19.  If you have documents to pick up, please pick them up by July 21. During the move, advisers will not have access to systems that allow us to process documents; applications received after July 19 will likely take longer than usual to be processed (7-10 days).  Please plan accordingly.

  • What if I have an immigration emergency when the office is closed?
Advisers will still be available through email. During business hours, you can email your adviser directly, or write to us at: international-affairs@uchicago.edu with the word 'URGENT' in the subject line.

  • Can I schedule an ITIN appointment during this time?
No. Advisers will not be available for any in-person services.  Please contact the OIA front desk to schedule and ITIN appointment either before or after the move.
