To get a document notarized, you need to find a notary public. A notary public is a person authorized by the state of Illinois to verify your identification when you sign official documents. Be sure to bring proper identification (such as a passport) along with the document to be notarized.
For school-related business, you can get a document notarized free of charge at two locations on campus:
1) OIA. Appointment required. For school-related business only. The notary public at OIA will provide services to anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, including international students, scholars, postdoctoral researchers, staff, faculty and their dependents.
We will not provide services on behalf of other entities, such as employers of the University's international students, or for non-school-related business. To get a document notarized at OIA, you must schedule an appointment prior to coming to OIA. Please send your request to firstname.lastname@example.org.
2) The Registrar's Office. For school-related business, only. To make an appointment, please email email@example.com.
If your business is not school-related, you will have to find a private notary; a Google search for "notary" and your location should turn up several options.
